mixed media on paper.
24" x 18"
This work came from an interest and inexperience at making background and separating the figure from the surrounding area. I also was interested in mix media pieces, I have done a few before, but never with screen printing. These bring together the best parts of painting and screen printing, it has a focused figure and a vague background. I find that full screen prints can take a lot of time and involvement and wanted to be able to screen print with few layers. Also, they can be idea for backgrounds because of their flat nature. I can then rely on my rendering in gouache for the figure, which is something I enjoy.
I started with a screen-printed background that was essentially stamping the same vague paint mark in different colors, then painted a large figure over it. After this piece I wanted to work on downsizing the figure to a size I was more comfortable and accustomed to working it. Then the bird piece, it was the same concept but had more figure to fill out the larger space with smaller sizes. The ghost piece, I felt, did not work as well because it is pushed to the edge of the ground, so with the cattle, I wanted to create a large background and a smaller figure on the side. But felt that it could be even smaller, leading to the horse, and rabbit painting. I had like the more structured background of the horse painting, so worked on creating screens for a solid line background and working in a very small figure. Then tried it again with the leopard, with no stamp background and jus the small line art, on the large page, and the small figure.
